Before Traveling in Canada
Preparing for your journey to Canada is an exciting step in your educational adventure. Before you arrive, it’s important to gather all necessary documents, including your study permit, visa, and any required medical insurance. Make sure to research your institution’s orientation programs and familiarize yourself with Canadian culture, climate, and lifestyle. Additionally, consider arranging housing, setting up a bank account, and organizing transportation to ensure a smooth transition. This section provides essential information to help you plan and prepare for a successful start to your studies in Canada.
Student Permit
If you are planning to study in Canada, obtaining a study permit is a crucial step. A study permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at a DLI in Canada. It is important to note that a study permit is not a visa. You may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter Canada.
Most international students require a study permit to study in Canada. However, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) lists some exceptions.
International students should apply online for a study permit as soon as they receive an admission email and letter of acceptance from the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts. Check IRCC’s estimated processing times to find out how long it can take to process your application.
Visa and Travel Planning
International students planning to attend the VADArts must meet specific travel requirements to ensure a smooth transition into their studies. The first step is to ensure they have a valid passport, as this is essential for international travel. Depending on their country of residence, students may also need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada. This visa allows students to study in the country for the duration of their program, and the application process typically involves submitting proof of acceptance from VADArts, financial documents demonstrating the ability to support oneself while studying, and any other documents requested by the Canadian immigration authorities.
In addition to the TRV, students should also be aware of any health or safety requirements, such as undergoing a medical examination, which may be necessary depending on their home country. It’s important to check the specific guidelines provided by the Canadian government and VADArts to ensure all requirements are met well in advance of departure.
As travel restrictions related to COVID-19 may still be in place or subject to change, students should stay informed about the latest health and safety protocols. This may include providing proof of vaccination, undergoing testing before travel, or adhering to quarantine requirements upon arrival in Canada.
Once students arrive in Canada, they must comply with all immigration regulations. This includes maintaining full-time enrolment at VADArts and making satisfactory academic progress throughout their studies. Students should also be aware that they are required to keep their immigration documents up to date during their stay, including their passport and any necessary permits or visas.
To avoid any travel delays or complications, it is recommended that students begin their travel planning well in advance, ensuring they have ample time to secure all necessary documentation, arrange their travel, and familiarize themselves with any local regulations or requirements that may apply.
Temporary Health Insurance for International Students
To ensure the protection and well-being of our students, VADArts requires all full-time international students to health insurance coverage. Students must provide the institution with evidence of sufficient health care coverage prior to the first day of class.
Due to certain laws in place, international students will need to secure temporary health insurance coverage from a private insurer for the first three months in Canada. We strongly recommend students consider reputable private insurers such as Guard.me and StudyInsured, with plans specifically tailored to meet the needs of international students.
Without the correct insurance health care in Canada can cost thousands of dollars per day. Accompanying family members are also strongly advised to have health insurance.
Once You’re in Canada
Now that you’ve arrived in Canada, it’s time to take care of some important tasks to help you settle in smoothly. This section will guide you through the steps of crossing the border, obtaining identification, opening a bank account, getting a local cell phone, and applying for the Medical Services Plan (MSP). These essential actions will ensure you’re ready to start your life here. For more information on adjusting to your new environment and accessing student support services, be sure to check out the resource section below.
Upon Arrival at a Port of Entry
When you reach a Canadian port of entry, a border officer will review your eligibility and make a final decision on whether to allow you entry. If you have been approved for a study permit from outside Canada, it will be issued (printed) during this process. Make sure to check your study permit to ensure all the details are correct and the appropriate conditions have been imposed.
British Columbia (BC) Health Insurance
The Medical Services Plan (MSP) provides essential medical coverage to all residents within British Columbia.
As per, the Medical Protect Act it is mandatory for all persons residing in BC for 6 months or longer to register for MSP. International Students attending VADArts must apply for MSP as soon as they arrive in BC.1
Once approved, students will receive an invoice for the monthly premium2 and a BC Services Card, which serves as their health insurance card.
BC Fair PharmaCare
It is recommended that most students register for the BC Fair PharmaCare program, which may provide additional coverage for prescription drugs, medical devices, and pharmacy services.
