1. Policy Statement


The Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts “VADArts” is committed to fostering a learning and working environment that is inclusive, respectful, and free from harassment, discrimination, and racism. This policy outlines our commitment to preventing and addressing harassment and racism in all forms and provides procedures for reporting and resolving concerns.

This policy was developed not in response to incidents at this Academy but as part of the provincial government’s initiative to standardize responses to incidents at post-secondary institutions in BC.The

2. Scope

This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors of VADArts. It covers all interactions that occur on campus, in online learning environments, during institution-sponsored activities, and in any other setting where institutional community members represent VADArts.

3. Definitions

3.1 Harassment: Harassment includes, but is not limited to, any unwelcome conduct that demeans, humiliates, or threatens an individual based on a protected characteristic. This may be verbal, physical, psychological, or digital in nature. Examples of harassment include:

  • Unwelcome jokes, slurs, or comments about an individual’s race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristic.
  • Intimidation, bullying, or threats, including cyberbullying.
  • Displaying or distributing offensive images or materials.

3.2 Racism: Racism refers to any act—whether intentional or unintentional—that reinforces racial superiority or inferiority, leading to discrimination or exclusion. This includes systemic racism, micro-aggressions, and overt acts of racial discrimination. Examples of racism include:

  • Racial slurs, stereotypes, or derogatory remarks.
  • Denying opportunities based on race or ethnicity.
  • Unequal treatment in academic or workplace settings.

4. Prohibited Conduct

The Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts strictly prohibits:

  • Any form of harassment, discrimination, or racism.
  • Retaliation against individuals who report harassment or racism.
  • Creating, sharing, or promoting discriminatory or offensive content.

5. Reporting and Complaint Procedures

5.1 How to Report: Individuals who experience or witness harassment or racism are encouraged to report the incident to a faculty member, supervisor, or student advisor.

5.2 Investigation Process: Upon receiving a complaint, the institution will:

  1. Conduct a confidential review of the report.
  2. Assign an investigator to gather relevant information.
  3. Interview involved parties and witnesses.
  4. Determine appropriate action based on findings.

6. Consequences and Remedies

Individuals found responsible for harassment or racism may face disciplinary action, including warnings, suspension, expulsion, or termination.

Likewise, support services, including counseling and mediation, will be offered to affected individuals
